In the first three sessions of this six week Promo/Trailer course we are going to explore three different promo styles: Hard Sell, Dramatic and Soft Sell reads.
In the fourth week, we begin working on Movie Trailer Reads. We'll start with the Dramatic Trailer Read to be followed by the Comedy Trailer Read in week five. Week six will cover the Movie Reviews Trailer Read, Interstitials, EPK's and other exciting aspects of the Trailer world.
Each week you will receive six scripts and be instructed to pick one of them to read aloud twice during our session. I will direct you for your first read and critique your next read. Your second read should reflect your ability to take direction and give you an idea of what you need to work on to be better at the next session.
Week One: The Hard Sell Promo Read
What is a hard sell? In layman terms, it's when you use maximum pressure to sell, trying hard to convince the customer to buy.
Example: "He was giving us the hard sell. He almost forced us to sign the contract."
In voice-over speak, it means to be aggressive in your delivery. Energetic, and possibly slightly louder in volume.
The goal in the hard sell read is to drive the product home quickly and abrasively to the consumer.Week Two: The Soft Sell Promo Read
What is a soft sell? Not pressuring the customer, showing the product and letting the customer decide.
Example: "I like the soft-sell guys-the ones who let you take a car for a drive and see if you like it."
The idea here is to finesse the copy and soothe the consumer into accepting your pitch and purchasing the product or watching the program you are promoting. A more laid back style usually wins the day when reading soft sell promo spots.Week Three: The Dramatic Promo Read
This is the hard sell read with more intimate intensity.
You don't have to shout or push to achieve maximum effect. We will cover some microphone techniques that will help you let your voice do the heavy work while you interpret the copy in the most ominous way possible.
This read has elements of technique that give us the perfect segue way to week four, the Dramatic Trailer Read. We will also work on trailer vocal exercises. Some exercise copy will be included in this weeks six script package.Week Four: The Dramatic Trailer Read
In this session you will choose one of the six dramatic scripts sent to you and I will pick a second script for you to read.
We will discuss my rendition of the How Stella Got Her Groove Back, trailer, which will also be included with your batch of six.
I encourage you to take a shot at performing the Stella trailer and get critiqued. You can listen to the original trailer and bone up on your technique before the class.Week Five: The Comedy Trailer Read
In my book You Can Bank on Your Voice, I tell you that you can achieve the perfect Comedy Trailer read simply "with a smile."
In addition to the six scripts in your course book for this week is my Dumb & Dumberer trailer script. Take a shot at reading it.
We will also discuss the promo/trailer demo.

We'll also discuss Interstitials, EPK's, Tags and Disclaimers. My review trailer for Friday After Next, is included in your course book in addition to your other review scripts.
A Special Bonus Comprehensive Industry Contacts Lists will be emailed to you in this final week.
I will direct you as you read my Friday After Next trailer (click to listen). We will also discuss marketing your promo/trailer demo.
